Mapping Abolition

This is a seed project that experimentally maps spaces of abolition and abolitionist struggle. Utilizing GIS systems, these interactive maps highlight political struggle and placemaking practices by ordinary people and community grassroots activists.

What We Do

We practice community geography to produce maps in partnership with the people they represent. The maps we create offer glimpses into everyday struggles against the multivalent and multiscalar forces of racial capitalism and settler colonialism.

We emphasize three key principles:

  • Collaborate: we work directly with community members and partner organizations to think about the uses and possibilities of space.
  • Map: we practice ‘mapping from below’ to visualize the uses and meanings of space from a grounded perspective.
  • Cultivate: we advance abolition in product, practice, and vision.
